Activity details
Tour the Monument to the Battle of the Nations with a 5-Stars Private Guide to learn about the battle that forever changed the European history. Experience a humbling yet inspiring experience at a memorial dedicated to the values of valour, faith, national strength and self-sacrifice. Enhance your experience with a guided tour of the Museum in der Runden Ecke.
You will meet with your Private Guide outside the New Town Hall and take public transport to reach the Monument. On the way, the Guide will give you a brief introduction to the history behind the impressive memorial to the 1813 Battle of Leipzig. This is one of the most important battles that took place on the European soil so it is worth hearing its story from an Expert-Guide who will be able to explain in detail everything that led towards Napoleon’s defeat.
Once you reach the location of the Monument, you will be astonished by the grand architecture and design of the memorial landmark. The walk up to the Monument builds up the anticipation as you can see the colossal structure that reaches 91 meters in height and weighs about 300 000 ton. You can walk around the building to see the amazing sculptures all the way around its four sides. Late in the evening, the structure is lit up and gives an amazing reflection of silver light in a large lake to its front.
During the 2-hours tour, you will climb up 361 steps to reach the lookout point (there is also a lift available). Here, you will be able to enjoy a spectacular view of Leipzig’s landscape. The Private Guide will also take you inside the Monument to see the 10-metre-high stone figures accompanied by the performances of the memorial choir in the crypt. Throughout the tour you will learn the history of the bloodiest battle between Napoleon’s army and the Coalition forces of Austria, Prussia, Sweden and Russia. You will also visit a museum with a collection of memoirs, costumes and other artifacts from the battle. After the tour, you will return to the Old Town.
The 5-hours option is an extended tour with entry to the Museum in der Runden Ecke in Old Town. It’s the original office of the GDR secret police. You will learn about the rise and fall of the Stasi political police force, their methods of work and the surveillance equipment. Most of the display consists of German-language documents but your licensed Private Guide will explain everything in the language chosen during the booking. This tour will absorb you in the gruesome history of Germany during the Cold War era.
